Set the scene
If you always dreamed of having a treehouse as a kid, this new hotel concept will go some way to scratching that itch. Occupying the top eight floors of an unloved Sixties tower next to The Langham and the BBC building at the top of Regent Street, the Treehouse Hotel has transformed the former Saint Georges Hotel and its rather legendary Heights bar into a kidult playground full of quirky wooden treehouse constructions, nostalgic trinkets, plants, bird boxes and purposefully eclectic vintage furniture. There are 95 rooms across six floors, all with big windows looking across London, and an atmospheric rooftop Mexican restaurant, co*cktail bar and roof terrace with some of the best views in town.
What’s the backstory?
This is the very first Treehouse Hotel from the people behind US brand 1 Hotels and aims to be a playful younger sibling with a focus on sustainability. There’s reclaimed wood all over the walls of the restaurant and bar, water-refill stations on each floor, a living wall on the roof terrace and an emphasis on locally-sourced produce. There are also further plans to turn the car park out front into a garden.

What can we expect in our room?
Rooms continue the treehouse theme, with interiors inspired by nature – wooden fittings and furniture, plus floor-to-ceiling birch-tree trunks in the bathroom – and toys including a piggy bank, gas lamp, cuckoo clock, Magic-8 ball, kaleidoscope and Paddington Bear teddy dotted around the place. There’s no radio, speaker or kettle, but TVs are enormous. The contemporary bathroom is glass-walled with only a sheer curtain to hide your modesty, so is best shared with a treehouse mate you’re fairly intimate with. The highlight? The comfy window seat where you can curl up and enjoy the epic view. Book a south- or east-facing room for the most dramatic skyline.

How about the food and drink?
You’ve got some of the best restaurants in London a short walk away, but head up to the 15th floor for elevated traditional Mexican plates at the atmospheric Madera. Opt for a window-side table and make your way through the margarita menu and classic dishes including homemade corn tacos, steaming sweetcorn tamales, giant prawns served on hot lava stones and pan plano (explained as ‘Mexican pizzas’). If you’d rather have something lighter, The Nest rooftop bar on the 16th floor serves creative snacks and small plates with the best views in the building. Breakfasts also have a Mexican flavour: go for the breakfast enchiladas or play it safe with the less exotic avocado on sourdough with tomatoes and poached eggs, which still has a pleasant kick of spice.

What’s the crowd like?
The prime rooftop location attracts an LA-meets-West-London crowd, dressed to impress and ready to party. There are glitzy dates, well-tailored City boys out for a good time and people hiding in booths with their entourages.
Anything to say about the service?
Service leans towards the American: formal but friendly and chatty, with staff always on hand to help and checking in on you very regularly throughout your stay.
What’s the neighbourhood scene like?
Treehouse couldn’t be better placed for central London exploring. The hotel straddles the border between Fitzrovia and Marylebone, and Soho’s vibrant bar and restaurant scene is just a few minutes’ walk away. To escape the fray, take a stroll up Portland Place to Regent’s Park.

Anything you’d change?
For a hotel championing sustainability, there's still a way to go: it was slightly disappointing to see some single-use plastic packaging still lurking in the minibar.
Is it worth it?
Yes: at less than £250 a night, you won’t find a more central location with better views.
