Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 Western atmosphere action-adventureRPG title is highly anticipated by all. Players will take control ofArthur Morgan, an outlaw and a member of the Van der Linde gang during 1899. While the “2” in the title makes it sound like it’s a sequel, it is actually a prequel to Red Dead Redemption.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Horse Guide

In Red Dead Redemption 2 Rockstar Games have included a new type of relationship that you can develop, we’re not talking about an NPC, but in fact your own steed becomes crucial to your adventure in the wild west. Unlocking Horses

Firstly, players will need to progress the main story until they can undertake Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego. In this mission players will sell a work horse and possibly obtain a new one. Here they can look at what the stable wares are, as well as picking up their DLC horse if applicable (available with pre-order). I suggest to skip buying one for now and just use your only horse. Proceed with the mission and once done, come back to Valentine to stock up on whatever you may need because we are going on an adventure.

Rare Horses

There are 3 rare types of horses that are found in the wild.

  • White Arabian located to the East of Lake Isabella.
  • Tiger-striped bay Mustang located to the East of Rio Del Lobo Rock.
  • Splashed white American Paint. It will randomly spawns at campfires that has hostile campers around the world of RDR2.

Obtaining the Arabian Horse

Players should head towards the East side of Lake Isabella. Dawn your winter attire and get your lasso ready as its time to break a new horse. If players are uncertain how to break a horse see Breaking Horses section. There will be a white coat Arabian Horse that is the best in the game until its color variants are available. Be sure to invest in horse reviver as this horse starting out without upgrades is a bit fragile. Be wary in towns as you might “accidentally” hit, knock or run civilians over.

Watch the video below to see how to gain the Arabian Horse:

Breaking Horses

If players want a new horse without spending money at the stables, they can:

  • Break wild horses to make them yours.
    • Bring out your lasso and lock on to the horse from a distance. Rotate around to its side and get on it. It will attempt to buck the player off. Hold down the left analog stick opposite to the direction of the bucking. After some time the horse will be broken and its up to the player to bond with it.
  • Steal horses to ride them temporarily.
    • Examples are hitched horses in town and horses attached to wagons/stage coaches.

Place your saddle on a horse so it will officially be yours. Or lead your horse back to a stable to make it your main horse and improve it.

Stable Services

Every major town has a stable which provides thefollowing services:

  • A place to buy and sell horses.
    • Sell stolen and wild horses at fences for better prices
  • Able to buy horse food and tonics
  • Buying and/or upgrading horses’ equipment
    • saddles, saddlebags, stirrups etc.
  • Storing horses. Up to 3 horses may be stored.
  • Customizing the appearance of the horse, accessories, and name.

Horse Care

  • Feed your horse to maintain a proper weight and clean it to avoid getting it dirty. The horse’s health and stamina cores are affected negatively when its hungry or dirty.
    • A dirty horse will lose its health meter 25% quicker
    • Clean your horse by riding it through a body of water, brushing it or purchase the Horse Care Package
  • Foods such as oatcakes, apples and hay will satisfy the horse’s hunger more than treats. Treats will increase bonding more compared to nutritious food. Certain herbs and plants can be fed to the horses. Be wary of overfeeding and underfeeding as it affects how the horse performs.
    • A fat or skinny horse will lose out a bit of their top speed.
      • Weight depends on how much and what you feed your horse.
      • 0-100 weight scale
      • 50 weight is fit

Horse Bonding

Having a high-level bond with your horse will result in these:

  • Improved horse health and stamina as well as new commands like drifting.
  • Larger whistle range and response speed when you call your horse.
    • If your horse is not close to you, you can whistle to bring him closer by hitting up on the directional pad. The range of the whistle starts small but improving the bond will increase the range.
    • The horse will not respond if you are indoors, at a camp, if its stabled and if the horse is too far away.
  • Able to cross deep waters and move through tough terrain.
  • More courage as the horse will less likely flee from when facing predators.
    • There will be some horses that will get agitated if they feel threatened or hear loud noises.
    • Use silent weapons to avoid this issue.

Perform these actions to increase horse bonding:

  • Calming your horse
  • Patting your horse
  • Feeding your horse when its hungry
  • Grooming the horse when dirty.
  • Removing a heavy item from your horse that it was carrying.
  • Riding, leading and swimming with your horse.
  • Hitching your horse at hitching posts or a tree.
    • A horse that are hitched regenerate its cores faster and it cannot walk away.

Horse Attributes

All horses have 4 attributes: health, stamina, speed and acceleration.

  • Stamina: how long can the horse exert themselves
    • Galloping at full speed
    • Swimming
    • Jumping
  • Health: Their health points
  • Speed: How fast the horse can be.
  • Acceleration: How fast they go from stationary to top speed

These attributes start at different numbers, but they can be improved. Even the same type of horse like an Arabian will have different stats due to gender and coat.

  • Equip the horse with stirrups and saddlesthat improve it
  • Each Bonding levelincreases the stamina and health meter
  • Horse attributes can only be upgraded to a maximum of ten tanks per category.

Horse Cores & It’s Relationship to Performance

There are a few things to keep in mind while riding your chosen horse, these things will affect the overall performance and relationship you have with that horse:

  • When the horse’s stamina core is fully depleted, it’s top speed will be reduced 1/3.
  • When the horse’s health core is low it’s top speed will be reduced 1/3.
  • The stamina and health core will be fully restored when the player sleep.
  • Hitching a horse to a post will refill both cores by 55% while leading the horse refills about 45%
  • A horse’s top speed will be decreased when carrying another human or a large animal. The stamina meter will drain faster when riding up slopes.
  • Horses will become agitated when forced to gallop at full speed when its stamina meter is empty.
    • Continuing to gallop may cause your horse buck you off.
    • The horse could become alarmed and dislodge you when a predator is nearby.
