Should You Let Astarion Drink Your BloodBaldur's Gate 3: Every Possible Ending For Astarion (3)

Early in the game, Astarion will attempt to secretly drink your blood during a long rest. You'll catch him doing this and learn his rather poorly-kept secret: he's a vampire spawn.

From here on, you'll be given the following options:

  • Kill him (DC 14, Strength)
  • Refuse to let him drink your blood.
  • Refuse to let him drink your blood and tell him to leave your party.
  • Allow him to indulge.

If you kill him or tell him to get lost, of course, this encounter has the possibility of ending Astarion's storyline right then and there.

Otherwise, this event is one of the best opportunities to win some of the rogue's notoriously-scarce favor during Act One, especially if you plan on romancing Astarion. That said, if you fail a check here, you may also find yourself completely exsanguinated by morning's light.

Letting Astarion drink your blood here will enhance his combat ability and permanently give him the Vampire Bite action. If Astarion's an integral team member, it might be worth letting him have the occasional nibble.

We cover each option of this encounter in greater detail in our guide on what happens if you let Astarion drink your blood.

Should You Give Astarion To Gandrel

Baldur's Gate 3: Every Possible Ending For Astarion (4)

Gandrel the Gur, found at (X:-26, Y:242) near Auntie Ethel's Riverside Teahouse, is on a quest to hunt down Astarion. You'll be faced with the following choices:

  • Surrender Astarion to Gandrel.
  • Defend Astarion and kill Gandrel
  • Ignore Gandrel (and prevent Astarion from fighting him)

By either exposing Astarion's identity or directing Gandrel to your camp, Astarion will be taken away, ending his personal story and removing him from your game permanently.

Siding against Gandrel will help you gain Astarion's approval and advance his personal story. Post-battle, Astarion will confide in you about his tragic past involving the Vampire Lord Cazador and speculate about Gandrel's affiliation with Cazador.

We explore each option of this encounter in more detail in our guide on whether you shouldside with Gandrel or Astarion.

Should You Tell Astarion To Bite Araj

Baldur's Gate 3: Every Possible Ending For Astarion (5)

In Act Two, you may encounter Araj Oblodra (X:-125, Y:-190), a drow scientist in the lower levels of Moonrise Towers.

She badly wants toget bittenby a vampire and will give you a potion granting a permanent +2 Strength boostin exchange.

Astarion, however, can sense that her blood is poisonous and does not want to debase himself like this. You'll have the following choices:

  • Respect Astarion's boundaries
  • Force the bite

Forcing Astarion to bite Araj here will strain your relationship with him and risk him leaving your party permanently, whereas respecting his wishes will lead to a cutscene in the next long rest that explores more of Astarion's personal story.

What To Say To Astarion During Act Two Romance

Baldur's Gate 3: Every Possible Ending For Astarion (6)

If you are romancing Astarion and have a high approval rating with him, at some point during Act Two, he will approach you and confide in you his discomfort with physical intimacy due to what he has had to do during his time enslaved by Cazador.

You'll have the following options:

  • Reassure Astarion that you are happy to take the relationship at his own comfortable pace.
  • Encourage Astarion to continue a carnal relationship in order to bury his trauma.
  • Guilt Astarion into continuing a physical relationship with you.

If you choose the latter two options or any option that results in Astarion feeling pressured to continue having a physical relationship with you, you will end any possibility of continuing a relationship with him and risk him leaving your party.

Should You Let Astarion Ascend

Baldur's Gate 3: Every Possible Ending For Astarion (7)

In Act Three, you'll have a chance to track down Cazador's Palace and make your way through his dungeon, where the vampire lord is holding a Rite of Profane Ascension. This is the climax of Astarion's personal story and contains most of his possible story endings.

Here's a breakdown of your options:

  1. Supporting Astarion's ascension:
    • An ascended Astarion will gain several powerful combat abilities.
    • However, this choice permanently alters Astarion's demeanor and personality to become more "evil."
  2. Persuading Astarion not to ascend:
    • You can convince Astarion not to go through with the ritual with a Persuasion check, leading him to simply kill Cazador.
    • This route results in a more benevolent and "good" Astarion.
    • This option will also lead to the pivotal decision of whether or not to kill Cazador's 7,007 vampire spawn.
  3. Denying Astarion's Request
    • You can flatly forbid Astarion from continuing the ascension ritual. Like option two, Astarion will refrain from ascending and simply kill Cazador.
    • Regardless of your relationship with him prior to this, however, Astarion will be disappointed and leave your party permanently.
  4. Interrupting the Ritual:
    • You can allow Astarion to begin ascending but interrupt the ritual halfway by killing Cazador before it completes.
    • This will make Astarion furious and force you to fight himto the death.

The Rite of Profane Ascension presents several complex choices with far-reaching implications. Our article about letting Astarion ascend will guide you through every nuance of this pivotal decision.

Vampire Ascendant Astarion Vs. Vampire Spawn Astarion

Baldur's Gate 3: Every Possible Ending For Astarion (8)

Ultimately, if Astarion does not leave your party permanently or get killed during the progress of his story quest, his storyline can be broken down into two endings: one where he becomes the Vampire Ascendant, and one where he remains a Vampire Spawn.

Vampire Ascendant Astarion

If you allow Astarion to go through with the ascendant ritual, the following things occur:

  • Astarion seemingly becomes more confident and happy.
    • That being said, if you cast Detect Thoughts on him, he believes you to be degrading yourself by staying with him, revealing a continued lack of self-confidence and respect.
  • Astarion gains more raw combat power, and it's implied that his powers will continue to grow exponentially after the game's ending.
  • However, Vampire Ascendant Astarion also permanently changes, becomingmore arrogant, cruel, and power-hungry.
  • If you are currently romancing him, he will become uncomfortably possessive and domineering, viewing you as an object or pet.
  • Vampire Ascendant Astarion will offer to turn you into a vampire spawn but skirts around the topic of allowing you to become a full vampire.
  • Given the notes you can find in Cazador's room about Cazador's former master, it is heavily implied that the cycle of cruelty will continue and Astarion will eventually become the same as Cazador.

Vampire Spawn Astarion

If you persuade Astarion from going through with the ascendant ritual, the following things occur:

  • Astarion seemingly becomes more confident and happy.
  • Astarion expresses his gratitude for your guidance in helping him make the "right decision."
  • If you are currently romancing him, during a following long rest, a cutscene will occur where he leads you to his "grave" and explains how he was turned by Cazador.
    • He will thank you for giving him a chance during your adventures together.
  • If you defeat the Absolute, Astarion will regain the typical vampire spawn weaknesses, such as vulnerability to sunlight, and begin to burn in the sun.
    • This will result in an ending cutscene where he laments losing his ability to freely walk outside but expresses hope at living his life in freedom for the first time regardless.
